Identity Anchors

What it is

Identity Anchors are reminders of who you are outside of the startup. They are roles, values, or relationships that stay steady when the business feels unstable. Anchors keep you from confusing company performance with personal worth.

When to use it

Use this when your self-worth feels tied only to metrics, fundraising, or growth. If every bump in revenue feels like a judgment on you, Identity Anchors help restore perspective.

How to apply (3 to 4 steps)

1. List three identities you hold outside of work (parent, friend, athlete, volunteer, learner).

2. Write one concrete way you already live each identity.

3. Place visual reminders (photos, mementos, journal entries) where you work.

4. Revisit one anchor during high-stress weeks by taking a small action that reinforces it.

Try it now (Micro task)

Write down one identity you are proud of outside of being a founder. Schedule a 30-minute action this week that reflects it.

Founder story

"During a tough fundraising cycle, I felt worthless. My coach asked me to write three roles beyond CEO. I listed friend, brother, and writer. That week I hosted dinner for friends and wrote one page at night. I still had stress, but I no longer felt like my identity lived or died with the startup."

Why it works (Evidence)

Psychology research on self-complexity shows people with multiple valued identities are more resilient to setbacks. Anchors lower the emotional swing tied to business results and improve long-term mental health.
